Alabama grandma arrested on drug chargesFLORENCE, Alabama – The mass of prescription bottles took up a good portion of the conference table at the Florence, Alabama Police Department.
Five of the bottles were opened and Lorcet and Oxycontin pills were poured out. The pills from those five bottles alone are worth nearly $10,000 on the street, authorities said.
They say it is clear Lorene Evelyn White Shook was making a lot of money off illegal prescription sales.
The 65-year-old grandmother was arrested Sunday night and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and trafficking in morphine, according to a joint release from Alabama police, the Lauderdale County, Alabama Drug Task Force, Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
Information and complaints about Shook led to a four-month investigation by the agencies, which resulted in her arrest at her 603 S. Blair St. residence. Alabama Authorities say they conducted a three-hour search of her residence.
Along with the Oxycontin and Lorcet, police said they seized hydrocodone and found about 75 empty pill bottles and 132 bottles containing pills.
The empty bottles were for other controlled substances, such as Ambien, Diazepam, Xanax and Oxycodone, according to the agencies.
Alabama authorities say it is believed Shook made well into six figures in the past year dealing in the illegal drugs.
Lauderdale County, Alabama District Attorney Billy Jackson said Shook dealt with residents who would get the narcotics and sell them to her. She'd turn around and sell them on the street at a much higher cost.
Tim Glover, an investigator with the task force, said much of Shook's business has been through word of mouth.
"We've been hearing about her for years," Glover said, adding agents were finally able to get enough information for her arrest in recent months.
Several people walked up to Shook's residence in an attempt to buy prescription drugs while the agents were searching the residence, Glover said.
One man, Timothy Gavin Fields, 46, 1125 Colorado Ave., was arrested on outstanding warrants on ABI drug-related cases after coming to the house, officials said.
Glover said many people don't realize how major a problem prescription drug abuse has become. "It's the most widespread drug problem we have," he said.
"Oyxcontin is as addictive as crack cocaine." Jackson added.
Glover said Oxycontin abuse often involves needle injections, which brings additional safety concerns.
He also said Oxycontin is time released, but abusers often scrape off the coating so they can get the drug's full effect immediately. Agents said they have noticed an increase in overdose deaths related to Oxycontin abuse.
During the raid at Shook's house, Alabama agents also seized a loaded .22-caliber pistol and .20-gauge shotgun that had the serial number removed, they said. They also seized $2,405 in cash.
The Alabama task force will ask the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to explore charges related to altering the serial number of the firearm.
Alabama agents say neighbors and the general public helped in the investigation. Anyone with information on this or other drug-related cases is asked to call the task force at 764-7150. Drug Rehab by County
