Alabama Forensics Drug Technician Arrested

A drug technician with the Alabama department of forensic sciences was charged Monday with theft and possession of a controlled substance.

Auburn, Alabama police told news leader 9, 34-year-old Charlie Holcombe had been under investigation since November Fourth. The investigation began after a review was conducted on the cases Holcombe was assigned and several discrepancies were found.

Lt. Tommy Dawson, who headed up the investigation, said evidence including 49 lortab tablets, 20 oxycotin tablets and 17 dilaudid pills were taken by Holcombe in a one month period. All three drugs are considered pain medications that can easily be abused. Dawson also said cocaine was seized from Holcombe's residence.

Holcombe, who posted bond and was released, is charged with three counts of theft of property, theft of controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

Because of his arrest, all of the cases Holcombe signed off on in the year that he worked at the lab could be called into question. But for right now, the seven cases where he is known to have tampered with evidence will be re analyzed by other Alabama drug technicians.
