Alabama drug agents bust 3 local meth labs in span of 2 daysIllegal sites popping up all over city, Alabama law authorities say
Local drug agents busted three illegal methamphetamine labs in Huntsville, Alabama within two days this week.
That brings the total to six in just the past month. Another three labs have been seized in the rural areas of Madison County, Alabama during the past month, said Sgt. Jim Winn, commander of the Huntsville-Madison County Strategic Counterdrug Team.
Two men have already been charged with one of this week's lab seizures and agents were continuing to look for at least one other suspect this morning,
"It's not a good sign," Winn said. "Seeing so many of these labs within the city limits right now has really been an eye-opener."
All of last year, Alabama drug agents seized three, maybe four meth labs at most, in the city, said Winn.
"We've been gearing up for it because we knew it was coming," said Winn. "It was just a matter of time since nearly all of our surrounding counties have been overwhelmed with meth labs."
Methamphetamine is an addictive stimulant that's often made in clandestine labs with dangerous, explosive chemicals. The labs are usually found in rural areas because the fumes that are emitted from the cooking process are distinctly pungent.
On Tuesday night, Alabama officers found two illegal labs in southeast Huntsville: One in an automobile and the other in a house. No specific information on the locations will be released until the suspect is arrested, said Winn.
On Wednesday night, it took at least six hours to clean up the lab set up in an apartment at 2805 Meridian St. in northeast Huntsville, Winn said. A government contractor from Birmingham was called for the cleanup, he said.
Seized was a wide assortment of meth production chemicals and equipment, he said.
About an ounce of finished product was found, along with a 10-quart jar filled with meth oil, one of the last stages in the production process.
Agents seized items from "pretty much the entire apartment," Winn said. Agents charged David Whisenant, 32, 2805 Meridian St., with first-degree manufacturing of methamphetamine.
His stepbrother, who lived in one of the other two apartments in the building, was also arrested. Joseph A. Rodriguez, 27, of 2801 Meridian St., was charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine, said Winn.
Both remained in the Huntsville-Madison County Jail this morning.
The residents, including a child, living in the third apartment were not happy to learn about the lab, said Winn. They were evacuated during the cleanup.
Street methamphetamine is referred to by many names, such as "speed," "meth," and "chalk."
Inhaled by smoking
Methamphetamine hydrochloride, clear chunky crystals resembling ice that can be inhaled by smoking, is referred to as "ice," "crystal," and "glass."
Some of the reasons for its popularity, say Alabama investigators, is it produces a better, longer-lasting high than crack cocaine. Plus it's cheaper to make and easier to get.
Across Alabama, meth labs have seen a steady increase in the past five years. The following number of labs were seized, according to Alabama government statistics:
1998 - 1
1999 - 30
2000 - 82
2001 - 136
2002 - 201
