Alabama drug sweep nets 29 warrants for distributionTwenty people were arrested and nine more are wanted on crack-cocaine distribution charges after an undercover sting operation in the Mobile Terrace community, Alabama police announced Thursday.
Mobile, Alabama police and local FBI agents made 81 drug purchases during a four-month-long joint investigation in the neighborhood near Cody and Old Shell roads, Chief Sam Cochran said at an afternoon news conference.
Most of the arrests "should be lock and stock cases" because undercover officers used video to record the buys, Cochran said. Alabama officers spent between $20 and $500 on their purchases.
The sweep began Thursday morning with the arrest of 20 people, the chief said. Alabama police are looking for nine others and plan to issue two more distribution warrants as soon as they can determine the subjects' identity, Cochran said.
In addition, Alabama officers searched five homes Thursday, seizing more drug evidence, five handguns and five vehicles used in the drug sales, Cochran said.
The sweep also rounded up 11 others on active warrants and new charges of possessing a controlled substance.
The investigation -- the third in Mobile Terrace in the last 18 months -- was spurred by numerous complaints from Alabama residents and the Alabama officers who patrol the area, Cochran said. Mobile Terrace lies just outside the city limits but in the police jurisdiction on the west side of Cody Road, less than a mile from the fraternity and sorority houses and some dormitories on the University of South Alabama campus. The small subdivision of Hillsdale, much of which is owned by the university, lies between the campus and Mobile Terrace.
The Mobile Terrace neighborhood has been riddled with drug activity in the past.
"It's kind of like everyone in the Mobile, Alabama area knows they can come to this area to buy drugs, especially on a Friday or Saturday night," said Chief Deputy Lester Hargrove.
Twenty-nine people were arrested in April 2002 for attempting to buy drugs from undercover Alabama police officers in the Mobile Terrace and Hillsdale neighborhoods. Another 20 were arrested in the same area for drug distribution and possession charges in June 2002 after another undercover sting.
The following people were arrested in Thursday's sweep on distribution charges: Jerimah Adams, 38, Calvin Gaines, 22, Corey Harris, 24, Kenneth Shaffer, 40, Chineeke Wilson, 21, Warren Pugh, 25, Carla Martin, 40, Vincent Watts, 34, Patrick Eatmon, 21, Lance Johnson, 25, Parrish Johnson, 28, Harrison Taylor, Willie Crayton, 40, Earnest Harris, 51, David McHome, 20, William Seltzer, 49, Emmett Davis, 23, Eldredge Smith, 32, and Cedric Wooten, 21.
Alabama police are still looking for the following nine named people on drug distribution charges resulting from the sting: Dewayne Patterson, 22, Inez Pritchett, 35, Willie Williams, 22, John Smith, 22, Terry Orange, 46, Carlton Mosley, 21, Khari Johnson, 26, Demetrius Crayton, 30, and Eddie Mitchum, 21.
